Find my Nine Star KiWhat Nine Star Ki (Kyusei Kigaku) is
Nine Star Ki is the English name for Kyusei Kigaku, a Japanese system shaped in the early twentieth century from much older Chinese ideas: the magic square of the Lo Shu, the five elements and the eight trigrams of the I Ching. It became popular in the West through macrobiotic teachers and is still widely used in Japan for planning the year ahead.
The nine stars are not real stars. They are nine energies numbered one to nine, each tied to an element and a direction: 1 White Water, 2 Black Earth, 3 Jade Wood, 4 Green Wood, 5 Yellow Earth, 6 White Metal, 7 Red Metal, 8 White Earth and 9 Purple Fire.
How your Nine Star Ki numbers are calculated
Your main star depends on your birth year, but the Nine Star Ki year begins around 4 February, not 1 January. If you were born in January or the first days of February, the calculator counts you in the previous year, which is the most common reason hand calculations go wrong.
Your month star comes from your birth month, again measured by the solar months that start in early February, early March and so on. Because only the date matters, Nine Star Ki works perfectly well without a birth time.
What your WORLD DESTINY Nine Star Ki reading shows
Your result names your main star (honmei) and your month star (getsumei) with a description of each. It then follows your main star through the nine palaces of the Lo Shu square, showing the palace it occupies in each of the next five years and the meaning the tradition gives that position.
You can set your Nine Star Ki result beside your other charts to see shared themes, ask preset or free AI questions about it, save it as a PDF, or share an image card that leaves out personal details.
Main star, month star and yearly palaces explained
In Kyusei Kigaku your main star is read as your adult character and the way you meet the world, while your month star is linked with your emotional side and the person you were as a child. Reading the two together gives a fuller picture than either number alone.
Each year the nine stars shift around the square. When your star sits in the centre, the tradition sees a year of attention and visibility; other palaces are associated with starting out, quiet preparation, harvest or rest. The meanings are framed as seasons to work with, not events set in stone.
The element of each star also matters. Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal feed or check one another in the same cycle used in BaZi, so two people can read each other's stars to see where they naturally support each other and where they may need more patience. Many people in Japan also look at the palace for the coming year when planning a move, a new job or a big project, using it as a way to think about timing rather than as a rule. Because the outlook covers five years at once, you can see the rhythm ahead: a year for planting ideas may be followed by one for steady work and then one for showing results. Seeing that pattern laid out is often more useful than any single year on its own.
Accuracy and the February start of the year
The single biggest factor in getting the right star is the solar new year in early February, which this calculator handles for you. Birth time is not used, so there is nothing to guess. Everything is calculated in your browser, and your birthday is not stored.
