Chess rules

  1. White moves first, then the players take turns moving one piece at a time. Tap a piece to see the squares it can move to, shown as dots.
  2. The King moves one square in any direction, the Queen any distance along rows, columns and diagonals, the Rook along rows and columns, the Bishop along diagonals, and the Knight jumps in an L shape.
  3. A Pawn moves forward one square (two on its first move) and captures diagonally forward. When it reaches the last rank, it is promoted to a Queen, Rook, Bishop or Knight.
  4. Castling and en passant are allowed. A King under attack is in “check”; if there is no way out, it is “checkmate” and that side loses.
  5. The game is a draw if a player has no legal move but is not in check (stalemate), if the same position occurs three times, or if 50 moves pass with no capture or Pawn move.
